The general subject of the conference is “Life and Building.” Life and building are the focus of the entire Bible. “Life” here denotes the eternal, divine, uncreated, and indestructible life of God. This divine life is different from both the biological/physical life of all living organisms and the psychological life. Only God has the divine life, and it is the primary characteristic of God. This life can be defined in three ways: first, life is the content of God. Man has a need to receive God as life (John 1:12). Even if a man was sinless, he would still need the divine life. We receive the divine life by contacting God (Rom. 10:12-13). Second, life is the outflow of God. It is God’s heart to flow out as life into man. Revelation 22:1 describes the “river of water of life… proceeding out of the throne of God” in the New Jerusalem. Even in eternity, what will be flowing out of God will always be new and fresh! Third, life is Christ Himself (John 1:4; 11:25; 14:6; Col. 3:4). In John 11:25 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” We cannot separate the divine life from the person of Christ. When we contact God in Christ as the Spirit, we receive Him as life (1 John 5:12). Furthermore, this divine life is for the building of God. The word “building” here refers to the church which is the Body of Christ (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 4:12, 16). This is a corporate entity of all the believers in Christ, which entity expresses God. As the ultimate consummation of the church, the city New Jerusalem is described at the end of the Bible as “having the glory of God” (Rev. 21:11). The primary characteristic of the building of God is to express the glory of God, which glory is God’s expressed (Eph. 5:27).
Just as life and building are the focus of the entire Bible, the divine life and the building of God need to become the focus and emphasis of our own lives. 1 Peter 2:5 says, “You yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house.” So day by day, individually we need to contact God and receive a fresh supply of the divine life, which will invigorate, vitalize, renew, refresh, nourish, and supply us. And as we are supplied by the divine life, corporately we will experience being built up as God’s house, the corporate expression of God.
